Lake Ugii, a 27 sq. km freshwater lake in Arkhangai Province, is a vital habitat for migratory birds and fish. Recognized under the Ramsar Convention since 1999, it is home to over 150 bird species, including White Pelicans, Swans, Geese, Demoiselle Cranes, and Sandpipers. The lake’s western bank, rich in plant life, serves as a prime birdwatching location.

Day 1
Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport and meet your local guide for a transfer to your hotel. After settling in, take a short orientation tour of Ulaanbaatar, visiting landmarks such as Sukhbaatar Square, Gandan Monastery, or the Chinggis Khaan Museum, depending on your arrival time. In the evening, attend a briefing about the upcoming journey. Overnight in Ulaanbaatar.

Day 2
Drive to Lake Ugii

After breakfast, begin your drive west to Lake Ugii, located in Arkhangai Province. The lake is one of Mongolia’s most important birdwatching sites, attracting both migratory and resident species. Upon arrival, settle into your lakeside ger camp and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings. If time permits, take a gentle walk along the shore before dinner.

Day 3
Birdwatching and Photography at Lake Ugii

Spend two full days dedicated to bird observation and nature photography. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best light and activity around the lake. The western and northern shores are particularly good for spotting waterfowl and waders such as Dalmatian pelicans, cranes, ducks, and gulls. Between sessions, you can relax at the camp, review photos, or take short walks to observe other local wildlife. Evenings are free for discussions or optional short talks on Mongolian ecosystems.

Day 4

Spend a second day dedicated to bird observation and nature photography. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best light and activity around the lake. Day 5
Wildlife and Cultural Experience

Explore the diverse flora and fauna surrounding Lake Ugii, including steppe plants and small mammals often seen near the lakeshore. Later in the day, visit a local nomadic family to learn about their traditional lifestyle, dairy production, and herding practices. Enjoy optional horseback riding in the open steppe before returning to camp for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6
Visit Kharkhorin – The Ancient Capital

After breakfast, drive to Kharkhorin, once the capital of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Visit the Erdenezuu Monastery, Mongolia’s first Buddhist monastery, built using remnants of the ancient city. Explore the Kharkhorin Museum, which showcases archaeological findings and historical artifacts. Overnight in a ger camp near Kharkhorin.

Day 7
Return to Ulaanbaatar

Drive back to Ulaanbaatar, with stops along the way for photographs or a picnic lunch. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy free time for shopping, visiting local art galleries, or exploring the city independently. In the evening, you may choose to attend a traditional folk performance featuring throat singing and dance. Overnight in Ulaanbaatar.

Day 8
Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your departure flight.
