Mongolia is a paradise for bird watchers, with its vast lakes, rivers, and diverse landscapes attracting a rich variety of species. In the Gobi Desert, unique birds such as the Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture), Henderson's Ground Jay, and Saxaul Sparrow thrive in their natural habitats. Khustai National Park is home to 217 bird species, including 24 birds of prey such as eagles, falcons, and vultures.

Day 1
Ulaanbaatar – Terelj National Park

Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport and meet your local guide. Begin your journey with a short drive to the Tuul River, a habitat for waterfowl and migratory birds. Spend some time observing species along the riverbanks before continuing to Terelj National Park, known for its alpine scenery and forest birds. Enjoy a gentle walk near Turtle Rock or Aryabal Meditation Temple before returning to Ulaanbaatar in the evening. Visit Sukhbaatar Square for a short city orientation and, if conditions permit, take part in an evening stargazing session outside the city. Overnight in Ulaanbaatar.

Day 2
Flight to Dalanzadgad – Gateway to the Gobi Deser

After breakfast, take a morning flight to Dalanzadgad, the capital of Umnugobi Province. Upon arrival, meet your local driver and transfer to your ger camp in the Gobi Desert. In the afternoon, begin your first birdwatching session, focusing on desert-adapted species such as larks, wheatears, and sandgrouse. Dinner and overnight in a ger camp near Dalanzadgad.

Day 3
Bayanzag – Flaming Cliffs and Saxaul Forests

Travel to Bayanzag, known as the Flaming Cliffs, a red sandstone formation made famous by dinosaur fossil discoveries. Explore the surrounding saxaul forests, home to desert birds such as shrikes, warblers, and steppe eagles. Visit a nearby nomadic family to learn about life in the Gobi and their relationship with the desert environment. Enjoy a relaxed evening at the camp with views of the cliffs during sunset.

Day 4
Yol Valley – Khavtsgait Petroglyphs

Drive to Yol Valley in the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park, a deep gorge known for its cooler microclimate and alpine bird species such as the bearded vulture (lammergeier), Altai snowcock, and wallcreeper. Continue to Khavtsgait Petroglyphs, where ancient rock carvings overlook the desert plain. The area also provides excellent opportunities for spotting raptors and other steppe birds. End the day with sunset viewing and stargazing under the vast desert sky. Overnight in a ger camp.

Day 5
Return to Ulaanbaatar

Take a morning flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival, visit some of the city’s cultural sites such as the Gandan Monastery or the National Museum of Mongolia. In the evening, there is an optional night excursion to Khurel Togoot Astronomical Observatory, where you can view the night sky through telescopes and learn about Mongolia’s astronomy research. Overnight in Ulaanbaatar.

Day 6
Khustai National Park – Wild Horses and Birdlife

After breakfast, drive west to Khustai National Park, home to the reintroduced Przewalski’s horse (takhi). The park’s steppe and forest habitats also support numerous bird species, including raptors, hoopoes, and larks. Learn about the park’s conservation programs and enjoy an afternoon birdwatching walk in the valley. Overnight in a ger camp near the park.

Day 7
Return to Ulaanbaatar

Start early with a morning birding session in Khustai. After lunch, drive back to Ulaanbaatar. The evening is free for rest. Overnight in Ulaanbaatar.

Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your departure flight.
